More Surgery For Officers Wounded In East Boston Shooting

BOSTON (CBS) - Boston Police are trying to piece together how violence escalated so quickly inside a home on Gladstone Street in East Boston that left two officers critically wounded.

Officers Richard Cintolo and Matthew Morris have undergone additional surgeries. The two answered a domestic violence call and without warning were met with gunfire.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans met with both officers Friday morning. "The outstanding staff at MGH continue to help our officers during this difficult time. I can't thank them enough," said Evans.

Police say 33-year-old Kirk Figueroa was armed with an assault weapon and wearing a ballistic vest when he engaged the officers in the gunfight. Officers Cintolo and Morris were shot multiple times until they were pulled to safety by responding officers.

"Of all the scenes I've been to this is one of the most horrific and graphic I have seen," said Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley. Investigators removed several bags of evidence from the home Friday, including what appeared to be firearms cases.

Figueroa's wife, Doreen Vanterpool, tells WBZ-TV she had filed for divorce but the request had not yet been processed. While she was aware of his weapons and body armor she says Figueroa was a bounty hunter and in the military, though the Army Reserves has confirmed he never attended basic training and received a hardship discharge. She also says she never thought he was capable of anything like this.
