Boston Police Officer Shoots Driver In Roslindale During Struggle Over Gun In Car

BOSTON (CBS) - Boston Police say it was a routine traffic stop on Washington Street around 11:30 a.m., but when officers approached the car being driven by a man, police say they saw a weapon inside the vehicle.

"During the stop a struggle ensued between officers and a suspect over a firearm located in the vehicle," said Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long. He says it was during the struggle that one of the officers fired their weapon.

Sources tell the I-Team it was a female officer who shot the suspect in the leg when he eventually got out of the car. Police say the encounter was recorded. "A firearm was located at the scene, and there's body camera footage of the scene," said Long.

It brought a swarm of police mid-day to the busy neighborhood which is just near the Forest Hills MBTA stop. Buses were stopped stranding frustrated passengers, some with appointments. "My sister is getting ready to come out of the hospital and I was supposed to meet with her doctors. I'm not going to make it," said one passenger.

Others had no other transportation out of the area. "I don't know why they didn't reroute the buses from Roslindale Square," said another passenger who identified himself as Melvin trying to get to the VA hospital.

Police say the driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and three officers were also transported to the hospital for observation.

Some in the neighborhood are concerned about the weapon involved. "I can't knock police for doing their job and doing what's right to protect our community. Unfortunately, someone was hurt as a result of it," said Roslindale resident Brandon Campbell.

It's not yet clear what charges the driver will face.
