Off-Duty Boston Police Officer Who Struck, Killed Milton Student Won't Be Charged
MILTON (CBS) -- An off-duty Boston police officer won't be charged after he struck and killed an 18-year-old student while driving in Milton in early March.
Investigators say Boston Police Sgt. Warren Hoppie couldn't have avoided hitting Katelisa Etienne of Milton with his 2015 Jeep Wrangler on Brush Hill Road near Aberdeen Road around 3:30 p.m. on March 9.
Police say the Jeep swerved into the median in an attempt to avoid her. Hoppie, a 20-year veteran with Boston police, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Etienne, a senior at Milton High School, was rushed to Boston Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Hoppie, 44, of Hyde Park, wasn't impaired, using his cell phone or speeding at the time of the crash, according to a statement released Friday by State Police.
Witnesses told investigators Etienne entered the roadway on foot from behind a parked vehicle and was "mostly obscured from the view of oncoming motorists," according to the statement.
On Thursday, State Police and the district attorney's office informed the Etienne family of their findings.
