Mayor Walsh Proposes Pick Up, Drop Off Zones For Uber, Lyft In Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is set to propose several transportation changes Thursday, including one that will create pick up spots for Uber and Lyft rides in the city.

Later this month, the first pick up and drop off zone will be tested at Boylston and Kilmarnock streets. The zone will start at 5 p.m. and last until 8 a.m. each day.

Walsh hopes the pilot program will be safer for passengers and ease congestion by cutting down on double-parking. Signs will be posted in the area to help drivers and passengers.

The plan will officially be unveiled Thursday afternoon at the mayor's annual speech to the Boston Municipal Research Bureau.

Also included in the Walsh's overall transportation improvement proposal - a move to lower the speed limit on city streets from 25 to 20 miles per hour, new MBTA bus lanes on Brighton Avenue in Allston and North Washington Street downtown and free bus passes for all students who are in grades 7 through 12.

Walsh also plans to propose three bills, including one that would allow for photo enforcement for speed violations. It would also equip school buses with cameras to capture violations when the vehicle's stop arm is deployed.
