Boston Man Dies From The Flu

BOSTON (CBS) – A 23-year-old Boston man with underlying health conditions has died from the flu.

Luis Cabral of Dorchester died Sunday. It is the first death linked to influenza this season in Boston, health officials announced Tuesday.

His family says he suffered from sickle cell anemia and did not get a flu shot.

"He's a good man," his brother Alan Cabral said. "A husband, a good son and a good brother."

Since the beginning of October, there have been 122 reported cases of influenza in Boston, resulting in 32 people being hospitalized.

"This is a reminder for all Boston residents of the seriousness of influenza, especially in vulnerable populations," said Dr. Huy Nguyen, interim executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission.

The CDC says flu cases are widespread in Massachusetts and the rest of the country.

Health officials are asking residents to get vaccinated if they have not already done so.
