Boston Councilor Wants To Limit City Yard Sales
BOSTON (CBS) - One Boston city councilor is proposing a limitation on yard sales in the city citing the public nuisance.
The proposal includes limiting the number of yard sales to three or four times per year per household. Anyone who violates that amount could face a fine of up to $300.
Councilor Timothy McCarthy, District 5, says he has no problem with the occasional yard sale but some of his constituents have complained about residents who have yard sales every single weekend.
"The next door neighbors are dealing with this Friday night set up and then an all day Saturday event and it's really hurting their quality of life," McCarthy said.
McCarthy believes some of those holding the sales are actually buying items just for the purpose of reselling them. And, he says the sales can create a lot of trash which is picked up at the expense of taxpayers.
The proposal is now up for discussion with Boston's Inspectional Services Department.
