Boston-Bound Southwest Flight Aborts Takeoff After Engine Catches Fire In Chicago

BOSTON (CBS) – A Boston-bound flight was aborted late Wednesday night after an engine caught fire during takeoff.

Southwest flight 3299 was leaving Midway International Airport in Chicago when something went wrong with one of the engines.

A passenger on board recorded video of the fire, sparks and possible explosion on the right side of the jet.

The pilots aborted takeoff. No one was hurt.

"We pulled over and all these fire trucks came over and it was crazy," a woman who was on the plane told WBZ-TV.

"I was actually freaking out because I don't like flying that much anyway and then I just saw that go off and I thought it was going to die."

"I'm just happy it happened on the ground," another passenger told WBZ.

All 143 passengers were taken off the plane, put on buses and returned to the terminal, where they were switched to another flight overnight.

That flight arrived at Logan Airport just before 4 a.m. Thursday.

There's no word yet on what caused the engine fire.
