Bomb Squad Detonates Pipe Bomb In Marshfield Street

MARSHFIELD (CBS) – A pipe bomb found in a busy area of the Brant Rock section of Marshfield was detonated by the state police Bomb Squad late Sunday afternoon.

The Bomb Squad was called in after the suspicious device lying in the middle of Ocean Street was reported to a police officer in the area about 3:30 p.m.

Police and fire units responded and the primarily business area around the Brant Rock Esplanade was sealed off and evacuated.

The State Fire Marshal's office confirmed the device was a pipe bomb. The homemade pipe bomb was reportedly wrapped in electrical tape with wires sticking out of it.

Authorities said that after performing diagnostics on the device, the Bomb Squad tried to disrupt it remotely and it exploded just before 6:00.

There were no injuries reported.

State police assigned to the Fire Marshal's office and Marshfield police are investigating.

Marshfield police Chief Phillip Tavares said officials believe the pipe bomb had a specific target and was "definitely not" intended to target the general public.

"It ended up here, but we don't believe that it was placed here, and that part is still under investigation at this time," Tavares said.

Authorities said this incident is an example of why, if you see a suspicious-looking object, you should call authorities and do not touch it because simply moving a bomb can set it off.
