Beyoncé Surpasses Aretha Franklin as Woman with Second-Most GRAMMY Awards

By Kevin Rutherford

She's already the most-nominated female in GRAMMY history—and on Sunday, Beyoncé came one step closer to doing the same in the winners category, too.

Entering the evening, the R&B star was one behind Aretha Franklin for most GRAMMY awards by a female, with 17 to Franklin's 18. Early in the evening, she equaled Franklin's count by scoring a win for Best Surround Sound Album for her self-titled 2013 album.

Then, she finally got the lucky No. 19, winning for Best R&B Song with "Drunk in Love."

Now, Beyoncé must set her sights on Alison Krauss, who leads all women at the GRAMMYs with 27 awards.

While she won't hit that mark tonight, she can definitely near it. While she lost out for Best Urban Contemporary Album to Pharrell's G.I.R.L. and to Twenty Feet from Stardom for Best Music Film, she's still up for two more awards this evening—Album of the Year and Best R&B Performance—that could bring her total to 21.
