'Hoax Device' Forces Evacuation Of Several Beverly Businesses

BEVERLY (CBS) – Customers and employees were evacuated from several businesses in Beverly after a "hoax device" was found at a Bertucci's restaurant.

Police were called to the restaurant on Enon Street around 4:45 p.m. after the device was found.

The Massachusetts State Police bomb squad and Beverly Police responded to investigate.

Beverly Police blocked off the restaurant and surrounding buildings. Customers and employees from the restaurant as well as Starbucks, Eastern Bank, Pinkberry, Garden City Pub, and Depot Liquors were all evacuated as a precaution, police say.

Bomb squad members could be seen entering the building in protective gear. The device was deemed to not be a hazard and was removed from the building at about 6:45 p.m.

Police said the item was a nylon bag with wires.

All businesses were allowed to reopen with the exception of Bertucci's.

Police are investigating who placed the device in the restaurant.
