Zolak & Bertrand: Eagles Signing Tim Tebow Is A 'Useless, Useless Endeavor'

BOSTON (CBS) -- A few weeks ago, Tim Tebow worked out for the Eagles and left without a contract. And that was that. Or so we thought.

On Sunday evening, the Eagles surprised just about everybody by signing Tebow to a one-year contract.

Commence: Tebowmania.

The quarterback has never been able to do anything as a pro without making national headlines, so obviously, this signing drew quite a bit of attention.

Scott Zolak and Marc Bertrand discussed the signing on Monday, and they're not exactly sure what Chip Kelly and the Eagles are thinking.

"Chip Kelly wanted this guy -- for what reason, I don't know. I can't explain it to you," Bertand said.

"He's lost his mind," Zolak added.

"I don't know why anybody in the NFL would want this guy," Bertand said. "I didn't understand why Bill Belichick wanted this guy [in 2013]. ... It was a bad move. I hated it when the Patriots did it, I hate it for the Eagles right now. It's a useless, useless endeavor."

Beetle was just getting started.

"Do you really believe that there's anything he's done since he's been away from the game that has made him a better quarterback and a viable NFL starter? Or even a good backup?" Bertand asked.

"I've seen it firsthand," Zolak said. "There's an unwarranted -- I'm trying to put it politely, because he's a good kid. And I've always termed it as this -- he's the guy you want your daughter to bring home. He's your daughter's dream, he's your offensive coordinator's nightmare."

Zolak noted that Tebow did some work with Tom House ... but it won't really make a difference.

"He can't play the position," Zolak said. "He isn't a quarterback. Put a freaking neck roll on him and let him go play something else. He can't. [play QB]. You're going to tell me he's going to run the read option? He can't get around the end. He's got no lateral quickness. He's north-south, he's not east-west. He can't juke people."

Zolak, who himself spent eight years in the NFL, said that it's nothing personal with Tebow. It's just a matter of facing reality.

"Fool me once, fool me twice, fool me three times -- you are what you are, man," Zolak said. "Tim Tebow will never be able to throw. OK? You can sit here and root for the story and think it's cool and think it's one of the good things in the world. I fear God. I am a God-loving Christian. I believe that there is a higher power, I believe that there is a hell. I believe that this kid can never play the position at this level. OK? There it is. It's out there. This has nothing to do with Tim Tebow off [the field]. My job as an analyst at this level for the National Football League is to talk about the talent and you as the player.

"Can Tom Brady run? I would say no," Zolak continued. "Tom Brady will never run a 4.4. If he works out with 8 million track coaches and eats avocada and drinks water for the rest of his life, he'll never run a 4.4. Tebow will never learn to throw."
