Ben Cherington Named VP Of Baseball Ops For Blue Jays
BOSTON (CBS) -- Former Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington is back in baseball.
Cherington has been named vice president of baseball operations for the Toronto Blue Jays, the team announced on Wednesday.
"Cherington will impact every aspect of baseball operations, with an emphasis on player development, and will work closely with Gil Kim, director, player development," Toronto said in their announcement.
In his new role, Cherington will report to Blue Jays executive VP of baseball operations and general manager Ross Atkins. Player development was one of his strong points during his run with the Red Sox, producing young talent like Xander Bogearts, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Andrew Benintendi, among others.
Boston won the World Series under Cherington's watch in 2013, but he left the team in August when Dave Dombrowski was hired as president of baseball operations.
