Beached Dolphin Rescued, Returned To Assonet River In Freetown

FREETOWN (CBS) -- A dolphin that was beached for several hours was eventually rescued and returned to the Assonet River in Freetown on Friday, police say.

Firefighters responded to Cove Lane at Assonet Bay Shores around 5:44 p.m., according to the Freetown Police Facebook page. The animal control officer and the National Marine Fishery were also contacted.

Residents told police the dolphin was stranded eight to 10 hours due to low tide.

A police officer captured the incident on video.

A team rescued the dolphin on South Main Street near Stone Bridge, and it was returned to the river shortly after 7 p.m. Later, the dolphin could been seen swimming in Assonet Bay.
