Beach Week: Horseneck Beach In Westport

WESTPORT (CBS) - The third ranked New England beach, as voted on by our viewers, is Horseneck Beach in Westport, Massachusetts.

About 70 miles and an hour-and-a-half ride from Boston, this is an easy day trip.

Horseneck is spread across 600 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh.

It faces to the south-southwest and, therefore, the ocean waters are a tad warmer than most other New England beaches. The water temperature is currently in the upper 60's and climbing and it will get well into the 70's by late July and August.

This is a very large, sandy beach, about two miles long and it is known for its nearly constant breezy conditions, which are ideal for wind surfers.

There is ample parking, restrooms and showers.  However, there is no real "boardwalk."

You will find some good eating spots on the way to Horseneck, but if you plan on spending the day, you would be smart to bring your own food and drinks.

What makes Horseneck unique is its surroundings.

The estuary habitat right on the ocean makes it one of the premier birding locations in New England.

There is also a very popular, 100-site campground behind the dunes near "Gooseberry Neck."

Horseneck Beach is a must-see destination for beach lovers in New England and it's no surprise it landed in the top three favorites among our viewers.
