BC Junior Justin Dunn Drafted 19th Overall By Mets

BOSTON (CBS) -- One Boston College Eagle will soon soar off to the Major Leagues.

BC junior pitcher Justin Dunn was selected 19th overall by the New York Mets on Thursday night in the MLB First-Year Players Draft.

"That was a crazy moment," Dunn told the BC website. "Being picked at 19 was awesome and it's a great opportunity. I'm really thankful for it."

The righty went 4-1 with an ACC-leading 1.49 ERA for BC this season. He started the season off as a reliever, recording two saves and a win in nine appearances out of the bullpen but transitioned to the starting rotation in April. He made seven starts for the Eagles, recording a 1.43 ERA with 43 strikeouts.

For his career at The Heights, Dunn has a 9-6 record with a 3.45 ERA and six career shutouts. Over 120 innings of work, he has allowed 110 hits and issued 48 walks while striking out 124 batters.

A Freeport, New York native, Dunn grew up about 30 minutes from the home of the Mets, but actually grew up a Yankees fan. He watched the MLB Draft with his BC teammates down in Miami, as they prepare for their three-game Super Regional series against the Miami Hurricanes in the NCAA tournament.

Dunn is the second Eagle to be drafted in the first round in the last two years, joining outfielder Chris Shaw who drafted 31st overall by the San Francisco last year. Going 19th overall is tied for the highest a BC pitcher has ever drafted, matching Chris Lambert, who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004.
