Woman Rescued After Falling Through Ice Into Barnstable Pond
BARNSTABLE (CBS) – Firefighters in cold water rescue suits pulled a woman from a frigid pond Saturday morning after she fell through the ice in Barnstable.
The woman fell into Patty's Pond around 9:30 a.m. on Wakeby Road in Marston Mills.
While firefighters were heading to the scene, dispatcher Laurie Motte used her knowledge of the area to direct firefighters with the quickest route to reach the woman.
"I am familiar where the pond is, so I was able to direct him to the best place possible," she said.
When firefighters arrived, they saw the woman's head barely above the water, said Centerville Fire Captain Tom Burchell.
"A police officer attached a rope to me and started breaking our way through the ice," he said.
Firefighters used a rescue board to reach the woman, who was about 100 yards out into the pond, and brought her back to shore.
She had broken through the ice and was flailing when firefighters arrived.
The woman was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of hypothermia but is expected to be OK.
Firefighters called the rescue a "labor intensive event."
Neighbor Larry Linnell says rescue crews did a fantastic job braving the frigid waters.
"Fantastic! Those guys came down, they hustled down here, they had their whole crew, they had their boats and they're ready to do business," he said.
