Flames broke out around 9:30 p.m. on Millway Street. The building was an older house, which made it more difficult for firefighters.

A passerby called 911 after seeing the flames. Barnstable Deputy Fire Chief Rick Pfautz said crews battled heavy fire on the first and second floor, and it was a tough blaze to fight.

"The house is well over 200 years old, and a lot of void spaces, roof, over roof, so it made for a very stubborn fire to get out," Pfautz said. "Even though we had the fire knocked down quickly, to get to all those hot spots took quite a long time."

An elderly man was rushed from the home, suffering from smoke inhalation. He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital but later died.

The house suffered heavy damage. A cause has not yet been determined, but it is not believed to be suspicious.
