Patriots sign QB Bailey Zappe to 53-man roster

CBS News Boston

FOXBORO - The Patriots made several roster moves Saturday ahead of their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

They signed quarterback Bailey Zappe from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, and placed quarterback Matt Corral on the exempt/left squad list.

That opens the door for Zappe to be the number 2 quarterback behind Mac Jones Sunday.

Corral was absent from practice Friday for non-injury related reasons. Putting him on the exempt/left squad list allows the team to open up a roster spot, without releasing him.

The Patriots also placed cornerback Jack Jones on injured reserve, which means he'll miss at least the next four games. He had already been ruled out of Sunday's game with a hamstring injury.

The team signed running back Ty Montgomery II from the practice squad, and elevated linebacker Calvin Munson from the practice squad as well.
