Elderly Man Hit And Killed By Dump Truck In Back Bay

BOSTON (CBS) – People who live and work in the Back Bay area where an elderly man was struck and killed by a dump truck late Thursday called it a very dangerous and busy intersection.

The unidentified man, who is in his 80s, was walking in the area of Mass Ave. and Newbury Street when a dump truck hauling a compacter hit him.

Police said the man was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital but did not survive.

The driver of the truck did not stop at the scene. Officers stopped the truck a short time later.

It is not known if the driver faces any charges.

"It's pretty sad, it's unfortunate," said San Swan.

80-year-old Mary McLaughlin said traffic is at the intersection is bad, and "people never look where they're going and they're always on the phone."

"People are not quite as careful as they used to be," she said.

Even though the intersection is clearly marked, with signs and warning signals, people told WBZ-TV on Friday that more steps need to be taken to protect pedestrians.
