Authorities Seize Over $1 Million In Cash From Former State Representative

BOSTON (CBS) – Over one million dollars in cash has been seized from safe deposit boxes that were controlled by former Massachusetts State Representative John George.

George, 68, who was also a Dartmouth selectman, was convicted earlier this year of embezzling from a bus company he owned which was subsidized by taxpayers.

In July, George was sentenced to 70 months in prison. He was ordered to pay $688,772 in restitution and forfeit an additional $1.38 million to the U.S.

This week, U.S. Marshals found the over-sized safe deposit boxes filled to the brim with cash tied up in rolls of $100 bills, $50 bills and other denominations. The cash was found at a Santander Bank in New Bedford and a Citizens Bank in Fairhaven.

Prior to his sentencing, George said his liquid assets consisted of about $160,000 in bank accounts and approximately $28,000 in cash.
