VIDEO: Man Spit At Hikers Who Weren't Wearing Masks And Said 'I Have COVID'

ASHBURNHAM (CBS) -- Ashburnham police are trying to identify a man who spit at two hikers and told them "I have COVID." The incident happened Sunday on the Hudson Overlook along the Midstate Trail.

Police said the man and another older woman approached the two young women and chided them for not wearing face masks.

"He explained to them that it was the 'law' and that they were selfish," police said. "He aggressively turned towards them and stated, 'I have Covid' and began spitting at the young females."

Police said the man could face charges up to assault.

"That's not the right approach to deal with anything," said Ashburnham Police Lt. Chris Conrad. "It was hostile, it was inappropriate, it was threatening and it could even be assaultive."

The man is believed to be in his late 60s to early 70s and about 5 feet 11 inches tall with gray facial hair and light blue glasses.

Police put the video out in hopes someone will recognize him or he will turn himself in so they can get the full story.

"Again we don't have all the details on everything yet we need to speak with her again," Lt. Conrad said. "We're hoping the suspect comes forward so we can determine is there another side to this that we don't know about, that we didn't see on the video."

Anyone with information is asked to call Ashburnham police.
