Argument Linked to First Worcester Homicide Of 2014

WORCESTER (CBS) -- A 52-year-old man was shot to death Friday afternoon at the Albion rooming house, the police said.

At about 5:44 p.m. Friday, officers were dispatched to 765 Main St., the Albion rooming house, for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, the officers were told by witnesses that a shooting had taken place in the rooming house security office, the police said in a prepared statement.

The suspect was identified as 53-year-old Howard Penn, who resides in the rooming house. Penn was employed by the building's management company to be the security guard. Security personnel for the Albion are not armed and they do not work for an official security company. Penn does not possess a valid firearm license nor does he have an FID card, the police said.

The victim was identified as 52-year-old Lloyd Worster, who is employed by the building's management company as the custodian. According to witnesses, the two men were engaged in an argument in the moments leading up to the shooting.

Worster was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital and was subsequently pronounced deceased at about 6:26 p.m.

The Worcester Police Detective Bureau, members of the Police Department's Operation Division and members of the S.W.A.T. team searched the building for the suspect. Penn was eventually located within the building and placed under arrest without incident.

Penn was charged with homicide and additional charges may follow as the investigation continues, the police said. He faces arraignment Monday at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
