4 People, Including 4-Year-Old Boy And Mother, Injured In I-93 Crash
ANDOVER (CBS) – Four people were injured, including a 4-year-old boy and his mother, when a speeding car slammed into a vehicle that was stopped in the breakdown lane.
Massachusetts State Police said a 2007 Chevrolet HHR driven by a 28-year-old woman from Nashua, N.H. was stopped in the side of Interstate 93 North just before Exit 45 around 3 p.m. Friday. The breakdown lane is open to traffic at that time of day.
Initial investigation shows that a Ford Escape driven by a 22-year-old Bow, N.H. man slammed into the back of the Chevrolet "at a high rate of speed." Impact sent the car across the highway and into the left lane.
The New Hampshire woman and her son, who was in a car seat in the back of the car, suffered serious injuries.
They were rushed to Lawrence General Hospital. The boy was then taken by MedFlight to Boston Children's Hospital.
The driver and passenger of the second car were also injured. They were taken to Lawrence General and the driver was then taken to Beth Israel in Boston.
All northbound lanes of I-93 were shut down following the crash, resulting in several miles of traffic backup. The road has since reopened.
