Amtrak Train Fatally Strikes Person In Mansfield; Rail Delays Reported

MANSFIELD (CBS) -- A person was fatally struck by an Amtrak train in Mansfield late Thursday morning, authorities said.

On their website, Transit police say they received a report of a person possibly struck by a train around 11 a.m. Mansfield firefighters and EMS also responded.

Investigators say a man was trespassing on Track 2, when he was hit by an eastbound train near Norfolk Street.

The victim's identity has not yet been released.

Transit police and the Bristol County District Attorney's Office are handling the investigation.

Foul play is not suspect, police say.

The MBTA says police activity resulting from the incident is snarling rail traffic between Boston and Providence, with delays of at least an hour.

Passenger Helen Fuller of New York told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 that they're just being told to sit tight.

"I felt this bang and then this loud screeching," Fuller said. "They said you're going to be here for a long time.
