All Things Travel: Flights To Germany Begin At Green Airport

BOSTON (CBS) -- A major change for international airline travel in New England starts Thursday.

Condor Airlines will begin twice-weekly seasonal flights from T.F. Green in Rhode Island to Frankfurt, Germany. The flights will be the first to Europe from the airport located south of Providence.

The German airline has been steadily building its service to the U.S., now flying to 10 destinations, including two in Alaska. It offers connections to major cities in Europe.

The Rhode Island flights will put Condor in direct competition with Lufthansa German Airlines at Boston's Logan Airport that has daily flights to both Frankfurt and Munich.

Condor will use Boeing 767-300 aircraft non-stop flights, scheduled for seven hours, 20 minutes. It will carry up to 259 seats including 18 in business class.

Condor chose Providence for its U.S. expansion based on studies that showed that there was demand for their flights from Rhode Island, Connecticut and southeastern Massachusetts.

"Rhode Island has so much to offer for people on vacation," said Titus Johnson, Condor Vice President for the U.S. and Caribbean. "Fly-drive vacations will prove popular with visitors who want to see all of New England."

"Our aircraft have all been refurbished in the last few years and we offer full service on all of our flights," added Titus.

Condor adds new destinations with several flights a week and adds service as demand grows.

The airline is part of the Thomas Cook Group that will also be adding service in Boston for the first time in 2016. Flights will begin next spring between Logan Airport and Manchester, England.

In addition to Condor, Green is served by the following domestic carriers: American (US Airways), Cape Air, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and United Airlines.

In addition to on-airport parking, Green can be reached by the MBTA Commuter Rail from Boston and Peter Pan Bus Lines.
