Airline Group Proposes Shrinking Carry-On Size

WASHINGTON (CBS) -- Your carry-on luggage might have to get smaller.

One airline group is proposing to shrink carry-on size by about 20 percent.

The International Air Transport Association, which represents about 84 percent of total air traffic worldwide, says a standardized bag size of 21.5 x 13.5 x 7.5 inches would "make things easier for everybody."

Many international carriers have already adopted the new recommendations, but so far there's no word from American carriers.

The trade group says it wants to free up space in packed overhead bins.

Baggage manufacturers are working on luggage that will have a special label to let airlines know that they comply with the new guidelines. They're expected to hit stores later this year, the association said.
