Patriots Release Safety Steve Gregory

BOSTON (CBS) - The New England Patriots have released safety Steve Gregory.

The 31-year-old Gregory started 23 games for the Patriots over the last two seasons. In 26 games with New England, Gregory racked up 116 tackles, two forced fumbles and three interceptions (all in the 2012 season).

In cutting Gregory, the Patriots will save $2.85 million towards the 2014 salary cap, according to ESPN Boston's Field Yates. In his nine NFL seasons, Gregory has totaled 379 tackles and seven interceptions.

Second-year pro Duron Harmon will be among the New England safeties who could see a bigger role in 2014 without Gregory in the defensive backfield.
