Horse Dies In Agawam Stable Fire; Several Others Saved

AGAWAM (AP) — Authorities say one horse has died in a fire at an Agawam stable, but several other horses were rescued.

The fire at Crowley's Sales Barn and Stables was reported at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Agawam Fire Lt. James Deming says there were an estimated eight and 12 horses in the barn. Damage was estimated at about $100,000. There were no reports of human injuries.

Crowley's sells and auctions horses and offers rising classes and trail rides. It was established in 1960, according to its website.

The horse that died was named Lois and was owned by one of the stable's owners, Alice Crowley, according to its Facebook page.

The fire's cause remains under investigation. The state Fire Marshal is assisting.
