Adults With Disabilities Help With Thanksgiving Rush At Cape Cod Bakery

HYANNIS (CBS) - There's apple, blueberry, strawberry rhubarb, and that's not all.

For some, the only way to wrap up Thanksgiving dinner is with a slice, or two, of pie. So you can imagine how busy things are at the Centerville Pie Company today. The Cape Cod business is whipping up delicious desserts, with some bakers who add an extra layer of sweetness. The kitchen is bustling. It's a 24 hour a day race to the Thanksgiving finish line for Centerville Pie.

"Apple pie and pumpkin pie are the two top ones right now," says Kristin Broadly, the company's co-owner.

They're baking 3000 pies, mostly for pickup tomorrow.

"They say the elves come out around Christmas, but our elves are out now," she says.

Some of those baker-elves are from Cape Abilities in Hyannis, a non-profit that serves people with disabilities. The pie company employs 50 people from the organization.

"Without them, we don't have a pie shop," says Broadly.

Centerville Pies even built a kitchen at Cape Abilities so it would be convenient for their employees.

"I like working for the company because they're great people to work for, and they help people with difficulties," says David Wood, one of the workers from Cape Abilities.

"They are phenomenal workers. They care about what they do. Sometimes I need a kick and they give it to me," says Broadly.

And when the pies come out of the oven, they're packed at the shop in Centerville where there are piles of pies for people all over the Cape, handmade by some very special bakers.

"I get lots of hugs every day, so I think I'm on the right path," Broadly says.
