37,000 American Flags On Boston Common Honor Massachusetts Casualties Of War

BOSTON (CBS) - A Memorial Day tradition has transformed Boston Common once again for the holiday weekend.

37,000 American flags have been posted in honor of all the men and women from Massachusetts who died in battles dating back to the Revolutionary War.

Five-hundred volunteers created the military garden.

In a ceremony Thursday morning, relatives read the names of the fallen as Taps played in the distance.

Steve Kerrigan, the president of the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, said the display is meant to be jarring and inspiring.

The flags will stay in place until Tuesday.
