2016 Boston Marathon Men's Winner: Lemi Berhanu Hayle Of Ethiopia

BOSTON (CBS/AP) - Lemi Berhanu Hayle of Ethiopia pulled away from defending champion Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia with just over a mile to go and won the 2016 Boston Marathon Monday.

He finished in 2:12:45.

"Very difficult," Hayle told WBZ-TV's David Wade through a translator after the race.

Hayle, 21, earned his first major marathon victory. He has run four smaller marathons since 2014, winning three and finishing second in Dubai in January.

Desisa, the 2013 and 2015 champion, came in second at 2:13:32.

Yemane Tsegay made it a sweep for Ethiopia by finishing third in 2:14:02.

Zachary Hine of Dallas was the top American.  He finished tenth with a time of 2:21:37.
