20 Team MR8 Runners Enter NY Marathon To Honor Bombing Victim Martin Richard
BOSTON (AP) – A nonprofit organization created in honor of an 8-year-old Massachusetts boy killed in last year's Boston Marathon bombings has announced its roster of charity runners for the New York City Marathon in November.
The Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation says it picked the runners out of a pool of some 100 applicants. The 20 runners, most from the Boston-area and New York, had to complete an 11-page application. The average age on the team is about 39.
The organization, which invests in "education, athletics and community," was formed by Bill and Denise Richard after their son was killed in the April 15, 2013 bombings, which killed two others and injured about 260 more. It organized a team of 102 runners for the 2014 Boston Marathon that raised more than $1.25 million.
