Police investigating death of 2-year-old girl in Winthrop

2-year-old found dead at Winthrop home of police officer accused of child rape

WINTHROP - The death of a 2-year-old girl is being investigated in Winthrop. Winthrop Fire and Police responded to a Pleasant Street home at 10 a.m. for a report of the child in need of immediate emergency aid.

Police said the toddler was taken to the hospital by the town's fire chief. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital after life-saving measures were unsuccessful, State Police said.

An investigation is underway but police said the toddler's death doesn't indicate any signs of foul play or physical trauma.

State Police said a preliminary investigation suggests the child had an illness in recent days and was home with her mother, who called 911 to report an apparent medical emergency.

The child was transported from the home of Winthrop police officer James Feeley, who's behind bars accused of child rape. Feeley was arrested in December 2023 after he allegedly confessed his crime to the police chief.

An autopsy will be done to determine the child's official cause of death.
