WV Man Killed In Crash At Base Of Western Maryland Mountain

BLOOMINGTON, Md. (AP) -- Authorities in western Maryland say a West Virginia man was killed when a pickup truck crashed into a stone wall at the base of Backbone Mountain.

The Garrett County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that the crash occurred Sunday evening on Route 135 near Bloomington.

Officials say a Chevrolet S-10 truck failed to complete a turn into the roadway and crashed into the wall. The sheriff's office says the driver, 44-year-old Thomas Umstot of Ridgeley, West Virginia, died at the scene.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the wall is at the end of a 5-mile descent down Backbone Mountain and has been the site of many crashes.
