World War I Soldier Statue Damaged In Emmitsburg

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- The Frederick County Sheriff's Office says a statue of a World War I soldier in Emmitsburg has been damaged after a car crashed into it.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office says the statue was damaged Wednesday when a driver lost control in the rain and crashed into the statue at the end of West Main Street.

The spokeswoman says alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash. The Frederick News-Post reports repairs to the statue are now underway.

The statue stands roughly 13 feet tall and depicts the soldier walking between tree stumps. His right arm is raised and holds a grenade and his left hand clutches a rifle.
