Women's Voices Theater Festival To Include 50+ Theaters
WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than 50 theaters in the Washington area are joining a two-month festival to present new plays by women playwrights.
Organizers announced plans Tuesday for the Women's Voices Theater Festival to be held in September and October. It will open with a kickoff party Sept. 8 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
The theaters wanted to address the fact that far fewer plays by women receive full productions than those by male playwrights. American Theatre magazine says 24 percent of theater productions in the 2014-2015 season were by women.
Seven regional theaters originated the idea, including Arena Stage, Ford's Theatre, Round House Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Signature Theatre, Studio Theatre and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. Many others have joined in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
