Woman Slain, Man In Custody After Western Md. Shooting

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Washington County Sheriff's Office says a woman is dead and a man is in custody after a shooting near Sharpsburg.

Deputy First Class Carly Hose said Thursday that a man was taken into custody after the shooting Wednesday night in the 6000 block of River Road. She says the woman was found dead in a driveway.

The location is a rural area between the Potomac River and the Antietam National Battlefield about 60 miles west of Baltimore.

The shooting was reported shortly before 9 p.m.

Hose says the man was caught around 4 a.m. on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath, near the Route 34 bridge, after a chase.

Hose says the sheriff's office will release more information after the man is formally charged.
