Woman Sentenced For Striking Girl With Car In Md.

SNOW HILL, Md. (AP) -- A woman has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for striking and injuring a girl with her car in Ocean City.

Jasmine Denise Shuman was sentenced Friday in Worcester County Circuit Court in connection with the June 1 collision, which injured a 5-year-old child.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reports that Shuman apologized to the girl's family and cried as she gave a statement.

Prosecutors say the 19-year-old Shuman failed to stop for the child on Baltimore Avenue and then kept driving after striking the girl, though her lawyer said she left the scene to find police.

Police stopped Shuman before the Route 50 bridge.

Shuman also faces an 18-month suspended sentence and will be on supervised probation for two years after her release from jail.
