Woman Sentenced for Giving Baby Deadly Methadone Dose

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A Long Beach woman who gave a deadly dose of methadone to her baby daughter has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Charissa Bailey was sentenced Monday after pleading no contest to willful cruelty to a child likely to produce great bodily injury.

The 11-month-old girl died of an overdose at a motel in 2013.

Authorities say Bailey was a drug addict who'd received a week's supply of methadone from a clinic with warnings to lock it away from children.

Prosecutors say she gave the drug to the baby in order to soothe her.
