Woman Convicted In Maryland College Stabbing

OAKLAND, Md. (AP) -- An Oakland jury has convicted a former Garrett College student of second-degree assault for stabbing another female student 13 times in the school cafeteria.

Garrett County State's Attorney Lisa Welch says the verdict came Wednesday in the two-day trial of 20-year-old Shamaine Moore of Baltimore.

Moore was acquitted of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the January 2015 stabbing of 21-year-old Daniqua Harrington of Washington, D.C.

She faces up to 10 years in prison. No sentencing date was set.

Moore's public defender argued it was self-defense.

Welch acknowledged that Harrington punched Moore first. She says the jury was convinced either that Moore unreasonably perceived a need for self-defense or that the use of potentially deadly force was unwarranted.

Another student was cut in the hand trying to intervene.
