Woman Apparently Drowns in Deep Creek Lake

SWANTON, Md. (AP) — Maryland Natural Resources Police say a 68-year-old woman found dead in Deep Creek Lake apparently drowned.

Spokeswoman Candy Thomson said Friday that residents of the unincorporated, lakeside community of Swanton found Jane Avery's body Thursday afternoon floating near a private dock.

Thomson says there are no signs of foul play. She says the state medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The Oakland resident was well known in the area as artistic director of the Oakland-based Our Town Theatre. The theater says on its website that Avery touched many lives.

The Garrett County Commission for Women inducted Avery into its Hall of Fame in 1998.
