Woman Accused Of Killing Her Kids Now In Psychiatric Facility

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- Corrections officials say a woman charged with suffocating her two toddlers in her Cheverly home has been moved to a state psychiatric facility.

A spokeswoman for the Prince George's County Department of Corrections tells The Washington Post that 24-year-old Sonya Spoon was moved on Thursday.

Spokeswoman Yolanda Evans says Spoon was transferred to the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in Jessup after a psychiatrist found it would be a "better fit" for her.

Perkins, Maryland's forensic psychiatric hospital, is a maximum security facility, according to its website.

Spoon's children, 1-year-old Ayden and 3-year-old Kayla, were found unconscious Sunday with plastic bags and duct tape around their heads. They were pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Spoon is charged with first-degree murder in their deaths.
