Scattered wintry mix transitions to a cold rain on Sunday

Cool, clear Saturday in Maryland to start weekend

A chilly, but calmer and sunnier Saturday afternoon is giving way to a cold and dry evening across Maryland.  A brief and scattered wintry mix Sis possible Sunday morning, ahead of a cold drizzle.

The cold and active weather pattern continues through much of next week.

The forecast remains dry, but cold for evening plans

A storm system to our west will start to spread clouds into our area this evening and night. Temperatures quickly drop into the upper 20s and lower 30s by late evening.

Then, as clouds move in, temperatures will warm up a few degrees before sunrise Sunday morning. It'll be in the low to mid-30s by 7 a.m.

Light wintry mix, rain showers Sunday in Baltimore Metro

The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has declared Sunday a First Alert Weather Day for damp and slow travel. We are not expecting any severe winter weather conditions or disruptions. But, the weather will be less than ideal for regional travel. Midwest airport delays could trickle over to the east coast, as well. This is thanks to the same storm system.

A light wintry mix will develop across western Maryland late Saturday night into the predawn hours Sunday. This batch of light wintry weather is expected to expand eastward into central Maryland and the Baltimore metro Sunday morning.

Communities outside of the Baltimore Beltway and across Carroll and Frederick Counties have the greatest chance of seeing a brief light wintry mix for a few hours Sunday morning. That chance does extend as far southeast as Baltimore City.

Road conditions should stay wet across our entire WJZ viewing area on Sunday. Temperatures climb into the upper 30s and 40s Sunday afternoon, with a cold light rain continuing through early afternoon. Rainfall amounts could range from 0.20" to 0.40" across the region.

Another system arrives on Tuesday

The workweek begins dry with a partly to mostly cloudy sky with highs in the lower to middle 50s.

The next storm the WJZ First Alert Weather Team is closely watching arrives late Monday night into Tuesday morning. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has tagged Tuesday is a First Alert Weather Day; steady rain and areas of snow will slow the morning commute. This storm appears to have a greater potential of delivering winter weather to parts of the region in the form of snow, sleet and ice. This is especially true Tuesday morning for areas north and west of Baltimore City.

The exact track and strength of the storm will determine how much of our area receives winter weather... and exactly how much falls. As of Saturday evening, areas north and west of Baltimore City have the greatest chance of accumulating snow and/or ice. Though, the entire area has a least some chance of seeing a brief period of snow and ice on Tuesday, especially before noon. There are also indications that the wintry mix may eventually change over to a cold rain, even in our colder suburbs north and west of Baltimore.

Please check back with our team through the holiday weekend as details about the storm and its possible impacts become clear. Regardless of wintry weather, this will be a wet storm system and will put a dent in the ongoing drought.

Another storm system may impact Maryland late next week.

Have a great evening,
Cutter
