Western Md. Prison Bars Visitors During Security Check

CRESAPTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's prison agency says it's barring visitors from the maximum-security Western Correctional Institution near Cumberland while authorities check on an undisclosed security issue.

Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Gerard Shields said Wednesday the agency hopes to restore visitor access by this weekend. He says Eastertime is usually a busy time for prison visits.

The agency announced on its website and Twitter feed Wednesday morning that all visits to the prison were canceled until further notice.
