Western Md. Man Pleads Guilty In Fatal Stabbing

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A Washington County man faces a possible life sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the February stabbing of his former girlfriend.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that 41-year-old Thomas Hungerford entered the plea Wednesday in Washington County Circuit Court. Sentencing was set for Jan. 30.

In return for Hungerford's plea in the slaying of Tylena Sigler, prosecutors dropped 11 other charges, including those stemming from the stabbing of Sigler's friend Gerald Hurd.

Prosecutors say Hungerford stabbed Sigler 11 times at her home in Boonsboro after sending her text message saying her life was over.

The plea deal allows Hungerford to argue for a lesser sentence and a recommendation that he be sent to the Patuxent Institution, a maximum-security correctional mental health center in Jessup.
