WEATHER BLOG: The Big Chill

Temperatures this morning are still looking rather chilly compared to normal, however it isn't as cold as this time yesterday so we can look on the bright side there. But we will definitely need to bundle up today with well below normal temperatures and a stiff breeze. Overnight tonight a surface high will move eastward into the region some of the coldest air of the year along with it. Single digit lows can be expected, and many will want to warm up the car and bundle up extra tight as they head off to their Sunday morning activities. Despite plenty of sunshine on Sunday, the cold air aloft won't allow for much warmth to be realized, and instead another bitterly cold day is on tap, followed by a bitterly cold Sunday night.

The big buzz right now (other than the cold) is the potential storm early next week. There has been some model movement overnight, but not in the way expected. The European has moved towards the GFS, but not in low position east and west, but instead in timing. The European is significantly faster with the timing of the system. With all that said, nothing brings the system far enough east to bring much in the way of frozen precipitation to any of the I-95 cities. Instead a cold, heavy rain is likely for most of the area Monday night into Tuesday. If any precipitation were to be freezing in our area, it would likely be at the onset when temperatures will be cold enough at the surface to allow for freezing on some spots. The cold leading up to the event will mean many surfaces could be below freezing, even if air temperatures aren't. The system departs on Tuesday, however a feature following that low in the trough moves through on Tuesday night and has the potential to bring a quick accumulation.
