WEATHER BLOG: Big Chill Continues

We are looking at a very chilly start to the day today as predicted. An arctic high is set-up over the I-95 corridor, and when the sun comes up today that high will provide for rather clear skies. But the lack of warm air aloft means there will be nothing to mix down, and todays high should be another chilly one.

That high will be giving way tonight to an approaching storm system that has remained well advertised. Some snow will arrive to most of the area late tonight and bring travel issues as this cold shot has brought surface temperatures down below freezing in many places, which will allow even the lightest snow to accumulate. By tomorrow night though, warm air aloft will be flooding into the region and even temperatures at the surface will be forced to respond by rising overnight. Snow will likely changeover to a mix and then eventually all rain once the surface temperature gets above freezing.

Temperatures will continue to skyrocket in the warm sector on Tuesday, with upper 40s and 50s expected. The previous days snow and ice will quickly disappear. However the snow and ice melt, and more importantly the steady and potentially heavy rain will allow for a flooding threat for the area. I'm sure most would rather be dealing with rain than snow however and the warmth will give our furnaces a break. Precipitation will end on Tuesday night, and the kicker in the flow behind the storm will pull off to our east. On Thursday and Friday the next high pressure system moves into the
area and the end of the week looks much nicer than the beginning. The pleasant weather won't last into the coming weekend with the next storm tracking well to out north. No winter precipitation is expected, but Friday night and Saturday should see more rain come our way. Sunday will likely be the nicer day of the weekend as it stands right now.
