Washington County Draws More Workers From Outside
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's Washington County has become more of a magnet for workers who live elsewhere over the past decade.
The Herald Mail reports the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows more than 37,000 workers from outside commuting to jobs in Washington County. That's up 17 percent from a decade ago.
The data shows 1,500 workers were commuting from Montgomery County. About 7,000 were commuting from Franklin County, Pa., and 4,000 were coming from both Berkeley County, W.Va., and Frederick County, Md.
That contrasts with about 31,000 Washington County residents who leave the county each day for jobs. That number is up barely 1 percent in the past decade.
Experts say it's a good sign for the county's economic development.
