Wet, gloomy weather arrives in Maryland just in time to kickoff the weekend

Scattered rain will continue to sweep through Maryland Friday evening

A steady rain during first half of the weekend has prompted a Saturday is a First Alert Weather Day - a heads up that much needed rain will keep us cool and damp for the first half of the weekend. A period of colder, unsettled is in the forecast as we head into the second-half of January. 

Wet weather becomes widespread late Friday, Saturday

Scattered rain will continue to sweep through Maryland early this evening. There will be a lull in the wet weather overnight. Temperatures will gradually warm into the lower 50s across much of the metro through midnight. Areas of fog may develop late. 

A First Alert Weather Day is in-place on Saturday, as an extra heads up that your plans may be impacted by steady rain through most of the day, tapering off by early evening.

Rain becomes widespread and steady Friday night. A steady rain Saturday morning gives will transition to scattered showers by the afternoon. Rainfall totals could range from .5" for most locations and up to just more than an inch in a some areas. Temperatures will remain steady in the low to mid-40s through Saturday afternoon. 

Rain is desperately needed due to an ongoing drought and will help wash away remaining salt treatments still lingering from last month's early season winter weather on roadways and sidewalks. 

Winter cold blows into Maryland on Sunday

The second-half of the weekend will feature the return of winter temperatures. We'll peak in the low to mid-40s by the afternoon with winds gusting to 30 to 40 MPH, under a mix of sun and clouds. 

Factoring in the stronger winds, it'll feel like it's in the 20s by early Sunday evening. 

Winds could gust up to 50 MPH in higher elevations. Mountain snow showers are likely in Garrett County Sunday afternoon through next Monday morning. Spotty rain showers, with gustier winds and snow or sleet mixed in are possible across the Baltimore metro and eastern shore between 1 and 6 p.m.

The weather pattern favors more cold and possibly wintry weather as we head deeper into January. The first opportunity for some wintry weather arrives late next workweek. The First Alert Weather Team will continue to keep you updated as this weather pattern evolves.
