Univ. Of Md. Disappointed Corcoran Deal Fell Apart

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Officials at the Corcoran Gallery of Art had been talking to the University of Maryland about a possible partnership until Wednesday when the museum announced it would be taken over by George Washington University and the National Gallery of Art.

In an email to faculty, University of Maryland President Wallace Loh said Thursday that the school is disappointed its talks with the Corcoran fell through. He says the university discussed its proposal two weeks ago with the Corcoran and was awaiting a response when it was notified the Corcoran made a separate deal.

Loh says the University of Maryland proposed in December a "marriage of equals" with the Corcoran with co-management of the Corcoran and its art school.

Instead, the Corcoran opted to be taken over by two institutions.
